Life Story

1827

The clipping from the Aberdeen Journal 8th August 1827 shows John to have been the victim of an assault by a William Anderson on the 25th January that year (Burns Night). Perhaps a coincidence, but William Anderson resides at  Craigengarrow, likley the same as Craignagour where cousin John Allanach would later reside.

1841

The 1841 6th June Census records a son (James) being born and John working as an agricultural labourer. Age likely to be incorrect.

James Paul Allanach Census 1841

1861

The census of 1861 confirms John as Head of household as a farmer of 8 acres of land living with
wife Mary, son John Paull 11, daughter Catherine 5, Mary Milne Granddaughter 7 and Mary O Brien
(visitor) aged 8. The family are living at Brodie Brae (farm), Tullynessle, Aberdeenshire.

The OS map of 1868 states adjacent census properties just North of the village of Tullynessle but not
Brodie Brae.

1865

The lands valuation report from 1865 shows John Allanach as a farmer tenant of 19 years at Croft
no4 Millhookie. Perhaps Brodie Brae was an earlier name for Millhookie?

1875

The lands valuation report from 1875 shows John Allanach as a farmer tenant of 19 years at Croft
no6 Millhookie. The yearly rent of £6 is amongst the lowest of the tenant farmers on the page of the
Whitehaugh Estate roll.
