1696 List of Pollable Persons
There are some interesting documents however. For one the Poll books. These tax lists show who was eligible to pay tax in a particular year. The one for 1696 is impressively comprehensive. Whilst children are not listed, wives are included ‘and his wyfe’, meaning we can say that in 1696 there were 45 adult Allanachs and their children resident in Aberdeenshire. This appears to be the only county in which they were resident at this time. Therefore, there were approximately 150 Allanachs in existence in 1696!
I have mapped where each Allanach is stated in the Poll book onto Google Maps and we can clearly see they are clustered around Strathdon (Invernochtie as it then was) and Corgarff.
